According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife
website (www.tpwd.state.tx.us)
“It was here Stephen F. Austin, the
"Father of Texas," brought the first 297 families to colonize Texas
under a contract with the Mexican Government. From 1824 to 1836, San
Felipe de Austin was the social, economic, and political center, as
well as the capital of the American colonies in Texas. Due to the
many historic events that occurred here, the community acquired the
reputation 'Cradle of the Texas Liberty.'" Today you can relive
history by visiting the San Felipe Historical Site.
Be sure to visit the San Felipe
State Historical Site… “The Stephen F. Austin (historical)
Park lies beside the Brazos River on FM 1458. This history section
of the park encompasses 17 acres of land detached from the larger
recreational park. The historic site contains 7 blocks of the
original capital with the old well remaining as the only original
entity of the town. The park has added objects, including a store,
museum, cabin replica, monument, and memorial markers to tell the
story of the website.”–Austin’s First Colony, prepared by
the Texas Independence Trail. For more information contact
