According to its town website (www.industry-tx.com)
“Industry was the first permanent German settlement in Texas and is
situated in the heart of nature’s most charming rural landscape, on
rolling hills in western Austin County. Friedrich Ernst, Industry's
founder settled here in 1831, and gained Industry the title Cradle
of German Settlement in Texas.”
The town’s name, it has been said, was
bestowed upon the town by its Anglo neighbors, as a result of their
“industrious” work ethic.
Be sure to visit the Republic of
Texas Post Office… “In the historic park is the stone
structure that was the traditional Ernst Store within which the
Republic of Texas Post Office functioned. In 1972 the Lions Club
restored the structure which had two partial walls intact. Today
the old stone building is the lone remaining structure from the
historic early town, though the remains of other structures have
been unearthed at this site.” –Austin’s First Colony,
prepared by the Texas Independence Trail. For more
